Spring!
9. May 2010 by admin.
Spring has come to the Northwoods! For those of you that love to watch the birds, we already have several species of egrets and ducks nesting along the Menominee River this season. The Peshtigo River Trail offers the oppurtunity to view Osprey, King Fishers, Phoebe among many other birds. the Hemlock Curve Nature Trail offers more chances for viewing other birds. And don’t forget to take in the National Wildlife Refuge along the shore of Lake Michigan.

Marinette area
6. February 2010 by admin.
Hello everyone!
I thought I would write a bit about Marinette. Not only the city, but how the city got it’s name. The city was once just a fur trading post. The trading post was run by a Native-American/Canadian woman who was nicknamed Queen Marinette, after the French Queen, Marie Antoinette. Queen Marinette’s real name was Marie Chevalier. As time goes on, and you are interested, I’ll write a bit about our Queen. For now, let me simply say that Marinette was known as being a fair trader to native and white alike. Because of that, she received more business then other trading posts, eventually making her a fairly wealthy woman. Her life however was not easy and through it all she survived in the true spirit of our frontier. She is interred at the Forest Lawn Cemetary in the maosuleum, which is open to the public. Because of her popularity, and her contributions to this area, when the city was incorperated, Marinette was the only name that this ’settlement’ could have. When you visit this city named for her, take a few minutes and stop in to see her scarophogas and feel free to leave an offering of tobacco. We hope to soon have more information available, including a festival to celebrate the remarkable woman’s life. Keep tuned!
